Insulation Grants
Two types of insulation grant are available to homeowners and private tenants. Partial grants can cover up to 70% of the installation cost for Cavity Wall Insulation and Loft Insulation. 100% grants are also available for those who qualify. In both cases, the grants are arranged by approved insulation installers and they do not have to be paid back.
Please see our home page for an overview of the Insulation Grants and the benefits of installing home insulation.
Partial Insulation Grants
All homeowners and private tenants qualify for a grant of up to 70%. This is known as 'Able To Pay Funding'. Householders will have to pay a small contribution towards the cost. This is typically recovered within two years from the savings made on heating bills. This applies to both Cavity Wall Insulation Grants and Loft Insulation Grants.
100% Insulation Grants
Anyone aged 70 or above could be entitled to a Cavity Wall Insulation Grant or Loft Insulation Grant that will cover the entire cost of any insulation work. However, if you are a pensioner aged under 70, you will not receive a 100% grant unless you receive a benefit.
100% grants are also available to households where any person living in the house receives any of the following benefits, tax credits or allowances:
- Attendance Allowance
- Income Support
- Council Tax Benefit (single person's discount does not qualify)
- Disability Living Allowance
- Disabled Persons Tax Credit
- Housing Benefit
- Child Tax Credit (gross combined household income must be under £16,040, excluding all benefits)
- Working Tax Credit (gross combined household income must be under £16,040, excluding all benefits)
- Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
- War Disablement Pension **
- Pension Credit (state pension only does not qualify)
* Must also be in receipt of Constant Attendance Allowance
** Must include Mobility Supplement or Constant Attendance Allowance
Sounds too good to be true? The Government and utility companies consider these households to be a priority, which is why insulation is offered free of charge. This type of funding is also known as 'Priority Group'. You may be required to provide evidence of your age or benefits received in order to claim this fully funded grant.
Grants for loft insulation are restricted by the existing depth installed. Over 70s should typically have 60mm (2.5 inches) or less to qualify free, otherwise a partial grant may apply. If you are in receipt of benefits, the restrictions depend on the area and scheme. Partial grants typically require you to have 100mm (4 inches) or less. You may also be charged extra if you live in a large property or special access equipment / scaffolding are needed.
N.B. Pensioners aged under 70, will not receive a 100% insulation grant unless they also receive a qualifying benefit.
